Kumite in Japanese means to cross or engage hands in fighting. We have five methods of kumite training in Shorin Ryu Seibukan:
- Yakosoku Kumite – Pre-arranged or promised offensive and defensive movements executed between training partners. All methods of Kumite training other than Jiyu Kumite are pre-arranged.
- Ippon Kumite – One attack and defense between training partners. The purpose is to train the defender to execute the defensive movement in such a manner as to eliminate the possibility of the attacker making a continuous attack. The attack and defensive movements should be executed in a manner as to develop the best technical form as possible.
- Renzoku Kumite – Multiple Attacks, defenses, counter attacks and counter defenses between training partners. The purpose of Renzoku Kumite is to develop the ability to transition from defense to offense in the instance where a continuous attack cannot be eliminated or interrupted.
- Jiyu Ippon Kumite – Free exchange of one attack and one defense by training partners. The purpose is to insure that each partner has an equal development of attacking and defending in jiyu kumite.
- Jiyu Kumite – Free exchange of attacks and defenses between training partners. The purpose is to develop timing, distance, and spontaneous response in mutually agreed upon combat with another trained Seibukan member.
Renzoku Kumite
The pre-arranged sets for Renzoku Kumite can be based on traditional Okinawan Kata movements or any offensive or defensive methods the training partners choose. Renzoku Kumite based on traditional Okinawa Kata provides a unique combination of pre-arranged movements with the real life simulation of close combat drawn from the ancient methods of great fighting adepts.
Renzoku Kumite should be practiced under the following precepts:
- Create an atmosphere of attacking and recovering from the defensive movement of your partner
- Create an atmosphere of defending and counter attacking from a disadvantageous position
- Develop a sense of feeling that allows your sense of touch to guide you to your next defensive or offensive movement
- Thru Kotekitae, arm pounding, you will develop strength and resiliency in close combat
- Remain true to the Kata movements…..development of the Kata requires following the exactness of the Kata
Considerations to watch for when engaging in Renzoku Kumite no Undo:
- Create a spirit of combat……..if you train in a mechanical manor without realism you are creating a scenario to lose
- Assist your training partner by attacking and defending with strength but control……be responsible for your partner’s development
- Do not neglect good postures and technical skills………and the perfection of technique
- Do not forget the goal of actual combat is to end the fight quickly……..receive and attack…. develop limiting the attacker to one attack
Our founder, Zenryo Shimabukuro, warned against Renzoku Kumite training in the instance of not focusing on finding the “Finish” to the fight. So, each time you attack or defend in Renzoku Kumite you should focus on finishing the fight not completing the drill.
